Florida court sets atheist holy day

By Tony Green - Posted on 02 March 2009

In Florida, an atheist created a case agasinst the upcoming Easter and Passover Holy days. He hired an attorney to bring a discrimination case against the Christians and the Jews and observances of their Holy days. The argument was that it was unfair that atheist had no such reconised days.

The case was brought before a judge. After listening to the passionate presentation by the lawyer, the judge banged his gavel declaring, "Case Dismissed!".

The lawyer immediately stood objecting to the rulling saying, "Your honour, how can you possibly dismiss this case? The Christians have Christmas, Easter and others. The Jews have Passover, Yom Kippur and Hanukkah, yet my client and all other atheists have no such holidays."

The judge leaned forward in his chair saying, "But you do. Your client, counsel is woefully ignorant."

The lawyer said, "Your Honour, we are unaware of any special observance or holiday for atheists."

The Judge said, "The calendar says April 1st is April Fools Day. Psalm 14:1 states, 'The fool says in his heart, there is no God.' Thus, it is the opinion of this court, that if your client says there is no God, then he is a fool. Therefore April 1st is his day. Court is adjourned."

[TG: don't know if this is true or not... but thought it was a funny story worth sharing]

Very amusing.....surely the Judge was slightly wrong.............the atheist has at least another day to celebrate. - halloween, which I understand to be well celebrated in America. Looking this up on the internet, and in my very old dictionary, I came across the following:

"It is widely accepted that the early church missionaries chose to hold a festival at this time of year in order to absorb existing native Pagan practices into Christianity, thereby smoothing the conversion process."

"Encyclopaedia Britannica states that this date may have been chosen 'in an effort to supplant the Pagan holiday with a Christian observance'." (NB holiday)

So there we have it....Pagan......non-believer........"heathen: unenlightened (person)" from The Concise Oxford Dictionary IVth Edition 1959. Yes, another day for the atheist to celebrate, the judge didnt quite have all his facts to hand obviously - he let the prosecution off lightly.

Okay, I know it's only a joke, but I wonder how many others have a bit more time to look up similar snippets on this topic?

We also received this by e-mail over the weekend and I did find this funny but I checked and it is a joke. Pity it isn't real but oh well.
